Nearest airport to Somnath Temple is Diu Airport (DIU), about 85 km away, roughly 2 hours by road. But the best airport depends on where you’re flying from — Rajkot has the most flight options, Ahmedabad works for international travellers, and Keshod is closest but barely has flights.
Somnath Temple. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Prabhas Patan, near Veraval, Gujarat’s western coast. Millions of pilgrims every year. And no airport next to it.
You’ve got Diu at 85 km, Keshod at 52 km, Porbandar at 180 km, Rajkot at 195 km, Jamnagar at 250 km, Ahmedabad at 400 km. Six airports, all different distances, all with different flight options. Some are close but barely have flights. Some have flights from everywhere but are far away. Picking the right one isn’t as simple as “go to the nearest.”
I’ve looked into this for years — helping people plan Somnath trips, figuring out which airport actually works versus which one sounds good on paper. This guide covers the real stuff. Distances, taxi fares, road conditions, train connections, which airport makes sense for which situation. No fluff.
Which Airport is Actually Nearest?
Short answer: Diu. 85 km. Two hours.
Long answer: Keshod is closer. 52 km, 1.5 hours. But Keshod barely has flights. Alliance Air ran Mumbai-Keshod routes off and on. Sometimes there’s a flight, sometimes there isn’t. You can’t build a trip around it. So technically closest and actually closest are two different things here.
| Airport | Distance | Road Time | Flights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diu (DIU) | 85 km | ~2 hrs | Limited — Mumbai, Ahmedabad |
| Keshod (IXK) | 52 km | ~1.5 hrs | Very limited / irregular |
| Porbandar (PBD) | 180 km | ~3.5 hrs | Limited — Mumbai, Ahmedabad |
| Rajkot (RAJ) | 195 km | ~4 hrs | Excellent — all major cities |
| Jamnagar (JGA) | 250 km | ~5 hrs | Good — most cities |
| Ahmedabad (AMD) | 400 km | ~7 hrs | Best — domestic + international |
See that last column? That’s what actually decides things. Distance doesn’t matter if there’s no flight from your city.
Diu Airport — Nearest, But Not Always Best
Code: DIU. Alliance Air flies from Mumbai and Ahmedabad. That’s pretty much it.
From Mumbai — perfect. Direct flight, land, taxi, 2 hours to Somnath. Done. But from Delhi? Kolkata? Bangalore? You’d connect through Ahmedabad first, then fly to Diu. And at that point, might as well fly Rajkot and drive 4 hours. Similar total time, better flight options.
Taxis from Diu: ₹1,500-2,500 to Somnath. Outside the terminal. But here’s the thing — Diu is small. Sometimes three taxis wait. Sometimes zero. Peak season (Oct-Feb) is better, but still don’t assume one will be there. Pre-book if you can. Seriously.
Buses: GSRTC, maybe 3-4 a day to Veraval/Somnath. ₹100-150. If your flight lands and one’s about to leave, great. Otherwise you wait. And the bus stop is a 10-minute walk from the terminal.
Road: Diu Bridge, then highway. Paved, fine. Some rough patches near small towns. Worse during monsoon. Traffic near Veraval gets messy — be careful there.
My take: Diu makes sense if you’re already doing Diu anyway — the fort, beaches, Portuguese stuff. Fly in, spend a day, drive to Somnath. Two birds. But just transiting through Diu for Somnath? The limited flights and taxi uncertainty make it less practical than people assume.
Keshod — Technically Closest, Practically Useless
52 km. 1.5 hours. Sounds perfect. Finding a flight here doesn’t.
Alliance Air has run routes here. The airport exists. But “exists” and “reliable” are different words. Check before you book. Don’t assume.
If a taxi exists: ₹800-1,200. Might need to call ahead. Your hotel in Somnath can probably arrange pickup — call them. Buses? Almost nothing direct. You’d go to Veraval first.
Bottom line: Only use Keshod if a confirmed flight exists on your date. Otherwise, stop thinking about it.
Porbandar — The Scenic One
180 km. 3.5 hours. Alliance Air from Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Why pick this over Diu or Rajkot? Because the drive is gorgeous. Coastal road, Arabian Sea on one side, Gujarat countryside on the other. If you’re doing a Gujarat coastal tour, flying into Porbandar and driving to Somnath is genuinely beautiful.
Taxi: ₹2,500-3,500. Long but scenic. Bus: GSRTC, 4-5 daily, 4-4.5 hours via Veraval.
Tip — stop at Junagadh on the way. Uparkot Fort, 30 minutes. Have lunch there. The Kathiyawadi thali near the fort beats anything on the highway. Makes the drive shorter mentally.
Only makes sense if you’re combining Porbandar with Somnath. Otherwise, 180 km when Diu is 85 km doesn’t add up.
Rajkot — The One I’d Pick
195 km. 4 hours. But flights from everywhere — Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune. IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara. Daily service. You will find a flight.
Airport is proper too. Modern terminal, food court, lounges, prepaid taxi counter. Not like Diu where you stand outside hoping a car shows up.
Taxi: ₹2,500-3,500. Prepaid counter at airport — use it, no haggling. 4 hours on good highway. Rajkot to Junagadh is excellent road. Junagadh to Somnath is fine too.
Train: Rajkot to Veraval, multiple daily. ₹200-500. 5-6 hours. Then auto from Veraval station — ₹80-120. Cheapest option if time doesn’t matter.
Bus: GSRTC Volvo, ₹200-600. Multiple departures. 5 hours. AC, comfortable enough.
Self-drive: Rental cars at airport. Highway is one of the best in Gujarat. Wide, smooth, well-maintained. Pleasant 4-hour drive if you’re into that.
For most people, Rajkot is the answer. Close enough, flights from everywhere, proper airport. Unless you’re from Mumbai (Diu) or outside India (Ahmedabad), Rajkot is what I’d recommend.
Jamnagar — Only for the Dwarka Combo
250 km. 5 hours. IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet from major cities.
Don’t pick Jamnagar for Somnath alone. It’s the farthest. But if you’re also doing Dwarka — 230 km north of Jamnagar — then fly Jamnagar, hit Dwarka first, drive down to Somnath via Porbandar. Full Gujarat pilgrimage loop, no backtracking.
Taxi: ₹3,500-4,500. Long ride. Bus available but 5 hours when Rajkot offers shorter drive with same flights doesn’t make sense.
Only for the Dwarka-Somnath combo. Otherwise, skip it.
Ahmedabad — The International Entry Point
400 km. 7 hours by road. But Ahmedabad has everything — flights from every Indian city, international from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat, Singapore. If you’re flying in from outside India, this is probably your airport.
And you don’t have to drive 7 hours. Train is the move.
Somnath Express (19221): Leaves Ahmedabad Junction at 9:40 PM. Arrives Veraval around 7:30 AM next morning. ₹300-700 — Sleeper cheapest, 3AC more comfortable. Jabalpur Express is backup if Somnath Express is full. You save a hotel night, wake up 7 km from Somnath. This is what Gulf pilgrims do. Smart move.
Taxi: ₹4,500-6,000. 7 hours. Only makes sense split 3-4 ways. Highway is good — Ahmedabad to Rajkot is proper expressway, then Rajkot to Somnath via Junagadh.
Volvo bus: GSRTC overnight. ₹600-900. 7-8 hours. Leave evening, arrive morning.
Self-drive: Best highway in Gujarat. Smooth, wide. If you’re doing 7 hours, stop at Rajkot or Junagadh for breaks.
Don’t drive alone from Ahmedabad. Take the train. Group of 4+? Taxi works. International traveller? Ahmedabad + train is the play.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Pre-book taxis from Diu and Keshod. Small airports, uncertain availability.
- October to March is the window. Summer is 40°C+. Monsoon means potholes.
- Ahmedabad overnight train saves hotel night + drive. Best budget hack.
- Mangala Aarti at 7 AM. Reach by 6:30. By 10, queue’s long.
- Modest clothes at temple. No shorts, no sleeveless.
- Don’t skip Geeta Mandir, Bhalka Tirth, Triveni Sangam. All within few km. One auto ride. Most people miss these.
- Food: Trust Bhojanalaya near temple. Kathiyawadi thali — dal, baati, kadhi, rotla. Cheap and filling.

FAQs
Closest airport to Somnath?
Diu at 85 km. Keshod is 52 km but flights are unreliable.
Diu or Rajkot?
Mumbai — Diu. Everywhere else — Rajkot. The Ahmedabad connection to Diu kills the distance advantage.
Taxi from Diu easy?
Not always. Small airport, limited fleet. Pre-book during peak season or risk waiting.
Cheapest option?
Ahmedabad + Somnath Express train. ₹3,300-6,700. Saves hotel night too.
Somnath and Dwarka together?
Yes. Ahmedabad → Dwarka → Somnath → Ahmedabad. Or Jamnagar entry. 3-4 days minimum.
Bottom Line
Diu is closest. Ahmedabad has the best flights. Rajkot is the practical middle ground.
Most domestic travellers should pick Rajkot. International travellers should fly Ahmedabad and train overnight. Mumbai folks should go Diu. That covers 90% of situations.
And when you get to Somnath — don’t just do the Jyotirlinga and leave. Geeta Mandir has 18 pillars with the entire Gita carved into them. Bhalka Tirth is where Krishna’s earthly journey ended. Triveni Sangam is where three rivers meet the sea. All within a few kilometres. Give yourself an extra day.
