How to Visit Somnath in One Day from Ahmedabad (Night Train Both Ways)

31/07/2026 adminsy 11 min read

Trip Summary at a Glance

– Mode of transport: Somnath Express (19221 / 22958), night train both ways
– Duration: 1 Day / 2 Nights — zero work leaves needed
– Total budget: ₹3,200–₹4,200 per person (3AC train + hotel + auto + food)
– Key requirement: Book IRCTC tickets 15–30 days ahead; mobiles/electronics must go in the free temple cloakroom, no exceptions

One full day in Somnath, two nights on the train, zero leaves from work

Ok so here’s the short version — take the Somnath Express at night from Ahmedabad, sleep on the berth, wake up at Veraval around 6 AM, spend the whole day at the temple and nearby spots, then catch the return night train back. Two nights on the train, one full day on the ground. You don’t burn a single leave.

I’ve done this route four or five times now — first with family for darshan, then a couple of times because friends wanted to go and needed someone who knew the drill. The first time I actually messed up the auto booking and ended up paying ₹200 extra because I negotiated at the station when I was half-asleep from the overnight train. So learn from that, pre-book if you can.

Budget for the whole thing, if you’re not being fancy — somewhere around ₹3,200 to ₹4,500 per person including train, hotel, auto, and food. I’ll break all of it down below.

Which train to take and when to book it

There are two stations people get confused about — Somnath and Veraval. Veraval is the bigger one, about 6-7 km from the temple, and most trains stop there. So don’t panic when your ticket says Veraval. That’s normal.

The train everyone takes:

Train Number From Departs Arrives Duration
Somnath Express 19221 Ahmedabad Jn (ADI) ~10:10 PM Veraval (VRL) ~6:00 AM About 7h 50m
Somnath Express (return) 22958 Veraval (VRL) ~9:35 PM Ahmedabad Jn (ADI) ~5:25 AM About 7h 50m

There are other trains — Saurashtra Janta, and the Vande Bharat that runs the same route faster in daylight. But the whole point is you don’t want to waste daylight sitting on a train, so the night Somnath Express is the better pick. I always go 3AC — sleep is worth the extra ₹600-700 over sleeper.

Booking tips that matter:

  • IRCTC advance reservation opens 60 days out for mail/express trains. Book the moment your dates are fixed.
  • Tatkal opens one day before (AC from 10 AM, non-AC from 11 AM). Backup option only — fills in minutes during season.
  • If the direct train is sold out, search trains to Veraval instead of “Somnath” in the booking app. More options show up.

General sleeper is around ₹200-250 one way, 3AC runs ₹800-900. For a one-day trip where you need to be fresh the next morning, 3AC is the move.

Getting from Veraval station to the temple area

Train gets in around 6 AM. Step outside and you’ll see autos and shared jeeps. Temple is 6-7 km away, maybe 15-20 minutes by road.

My suggestion — go to the hotel first, freshen up, then head for darshan. Most budget hotels near the temple will let you keep bags even if the room isn’t ready at 6 AM. Sometimes they’ll give early check-in for ₹100-200 extra, sometimes free if you ask nicely and it’s not peak season. Worth it — you don’t want to be hauling a bag through the temple queue.

For timing and route info before you land, somnathyatra.com is worth bookmarking. Cross-check darshan slots and nearby spots from your phone on the train.

Where to stay — budget hotels and trust guest houses

You don’t need anything fancy for one night. Hotel Radhika is the go-to budget option near the temple — rooms around ₹1000, clean, walking distance to the temple. Walking distance matters here because you’ll be going back and forth for morning and evening aarti, and you don’t want to be stuck in traffic each time.

Radhika contact: 9228317067 — call a day ahead to confirm, especially if you’re arriving on the morning train. Tell them you’ll be there at 6 AM so they can sort early check-in.

There are dozens of similar budget hotels in the ₹800-1200 range. If Radhika is full, ask around — the area has no shortage. One thing, if you’re going in May or June, spend the extra ₹300-400 for AC. The sea breeze helps most of the year, but peak summer is genuinely hot and you won’t sleep well without it.

Shree Somnath Trust also runs guest houses — Sagar Darshan Atithi Gruh, Lilavati Atithi Bhavan — right in the temple complex. Book through somnath.org. They’re simple, clean, reasonably priced, but availability is limited and they go fast in season. Worth checking if you want to stay inside trust premises rather than a private hotel.

Before you pay, wherever you book — check walking distance from temple, hot water timing (some budget places only have it morning and evening), and whether they’ll hold your bags after checkout (most will, no charge).

The full day — what to actually do and when

This is where the auto package saves you. Instead of negotiating with fresh autos at the station and then again for every temple visit, hire one for the whole day.

Package: Veraval station pickup + full day sightseeing — around ₹1599.

Covers:

  • Station pickup in the morning
  • Drop to hotel
  • Full day sightseeing — temple area, Triveni Sangam, Bhalka Tirth, Gita Mandir, Panch Pandav Gufa, sometimes a beach stop
  • Drop back to station at night for your return train

Fix the price and itinerary before you start. Tell the guy what you want to see, agree it covers pickup-to-drop with no extra “waiting charges” unless you’re stopping for hours. Some auto drivers will try to push you toward shops for commission — just say no and stick to the plan.

The actual itinerary

  1. 6:00 AM — Reach Veraval, auto pickup
  2. 6:30-7:30 AM — Hotel check-in, freshen up
  3. 8:00 AM — Somnath Temple morning darshan (queue is light this early, gets heavy by 10)
  4. 9:30 AM — Breakfast near temple (thepla, poha, chai — the usual Gujarati stuff)
  5. 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM — Auto sightseeing: Triveni Sangam, Bhalka Tirth (where Krishna is believed to have left his body), Panch Pandav Gufa
  6. 1:00 – 2:30 PM — Lunch and rest at hotel. Afternoon heat is real, don’t push through it.
  7. 3:30 – 5:30 PM — Somnath beach, Gita Mandir, light shopping (prasad, shells, small stuff)
  8. 7:00 PM — Evening Sandhya aarti at the temple. Don’t skip this — the drums, the bells, the sea right there, the whole atmosphere changes. This is the reason you came.
  9. 8:00 – 9:00 PM — Jay Somnath Light and Sound Show, right after aarti. Worth it.
  10. 9:00 PM — Light dinner
  11. 9:15 PM — Auto to Veraval station
  12. 9:35 PM — Board return train

That’s a full day, not a rushed one. Enough slack for queues, for actually sitting through the aarti without checking your watch, for one proper meal.

Where to eat — Lilavati and Maheshwari

Two names you’ll hear a lot — Lilavati and Maheshwari. Both solid vegetarian places near the temple, the kind locals actually eat at. Pure veg, decent thalis, fair prices.

Rough costs:

  • Thali (unlimited, Gujarati style) — ₹150-220
  • Breakfast (poha, thepla, tea) — ₹50-80
  • Light dinner — ₹100-150 per person

I find Maheshwari a bit more consistent on taste. Lilavati is fine but gets crowded around 12:30-1:30 PM lunch hour, so expect a short wait if you hit it right then.

How much it all costs

Item Approx. Cost
Train Ahmedabad → Veraval (3AC) ₹800-900
Train Veraval → Ahmedabad (3AC) ₹800-900
Hotel (1 night, shared between 2) ₹500 per person
Auto — full day sightseeing ₹1599 shared (₹400-800 per person for 2-4 people)
Food (all meals + snacks) ₹400-500
Light & Sound Show entry ₹25-50
Temple prasad, small shopping ₹200-300 (optional)
Total per person (2 sharing) Roughly ₹3,200-4,200

Sleeper class instead of 3AC knocks off about ₹1200. Solo travel means the auto cost falls entirely on you — closer to ₹4,500-5,000.

Temple rules that trip up first-timers

Read this before you pack. Seriously.

  • No phones inside. Mobiles, cameras, smartwatches, all electronics — banned. Free lockers and cloakroom near the main entrance. Deposit everything before you join the darshan queue. Security checks are thorough at every entry, don’t try to sneak anything in.
  • No leather. Belts, wallets, leather bags — leave them at the hotel or deposit with your phone.
  • Dress modestly. Shoulders and knees covered. Traditional attire preferred, but any modest knee-length clothing works.
  • Darshan hours: 6:00 AM to 9:30-10:00 PM daily, no midday closure.
  • Aarti times: Morning 7:00 AM, Noon 12:00 PM, Evening 7:00 PM. Inner sanctum closes to general darshan during each aarti for about 30-45 minutes.
  • Light & Sound Show: “Jay Somnath,” 8:00-9:00 PM daily, skipped in heavy monsoon. Small entry fee. Gujarati and Hindi on alternate days.
  • Entry is free. Donations optional.

Pack a small backpack — leave the charger and bulky electronics at the hotel. Just carry what you need, and remember you’ll be depositing your phone at the cloakroom anyway.

What people usually mess up on this trip

  • General sleeper in peak season. It gets packed, especially around Mahashivratri and Kartik Purnima. Book AC, book early.
  • Skipping evening aarti because they’re tired. Don’t. You came all this way.
  • Not fixing auto price upfront. Always agree the package details before starting. WhatsApp confirmation if pre-booked, verbal with witnesses if at the station.
  • Carrying too much luggage. One-night trip, small backpack, done.
  • No water or cap for the afternoon. Somnath gets hot even outside summer, and you’ll walk more than you think.
  • Phone at the temple gate. You’ll be scrambling for the cloakroom while the queue moves. Deposit it before you join the line.

One more thing — first time I went, I didn’t know about the leather wallet rule. Had to run back to the hotel to leave it. Don’t be like me, just leave everything unnecessary at the hotel before you head out.

Going with elderly parents or grandparents

This route works for older family members — I’ve taken my own. But adjust the itinerary. Skip one or two of the farther sightseeing stops and use that time for sitting near the temple or beach instead. The train berths are comfortable enough for a night’s sleep even for elderly people, and the auto package means they’re not walking long stretches in heat looking for transport.

Wheelchairs and golf carts are available at the temple’s main gate for senior citizens — ask at the entrance. One thing to note, the Bhalka Tirth stop involves some walking on uneven ground, so if mobility is an issue, maybe skip that one and spend the time at Gita Mandir instead, which is more accessible.

Also, and this is practical — if your parents are on medication, carry those in your daypack, not in checked luggage or the auto boot. Temple visit can run 2-3 hours and you don’t want to be stuck without what they need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one day really enough for Somnath?

Yes, with this plan. Night train in, full day there, night train out. You get a proper day, not a rushed half-day.

Do I need to book the auto in advance?

You’ll find plenty at the station, but pre-arranging saves time and avoids haggling when you’re tired from the overnight train. Pre-booking is just smoother.

Is Veraval the same as Somnath?

Not exactly. Veraval is the main railway station, 6-7 km from the temple. There’s a smaller Somnath station, but far fewer trains stop there.

Best time of year?

October to March, weather is comfortable. May-June gets hot — get AC hotel and plan sightseeing for cooler parts of the day.

Food near the temple or should I carry?

Plenty of options, Lilavati and Maheshwari being the reliable ones. No need to carry snacks unless you have specific dietary needs.

Phone inside for photos?

No. Strictly banned. Deposit at the free lockers near the main gate.

Can I add Diu to this?

Yes, but that changes the plan to two full days and a different auto package. Talk to your driver about it separately — usually ₹1800-2200 extra depending on season, not part of the local ₹1599 package.

One last thing

Book the Somnath Express ticket a couple weeks ahead if you’re going in season. Call Radhika (9228317067) or use a booking app so you’re not searching at 6 AM with bags on your shoulder. Message the auto driver your itinerary a day before so he’s at the station ready. Check somnathyatra.com for any updated timings before you leave.

That’s all the planning this trip needs. The rest happens once you’re there.
